What did I do today?

Hours

11-06-99

Cut and laid the glass over the bottom of the H10, H11 & the aftermost part of the H7 panels.  Made sure I had good joint overlap onto the H2, H4 & H12 panels.  The layup went much quicker and easier than I expected.  The large flat panel surfaces and the smooth radiused corners probably helped the most.

Cut and laid the glass over the two H7 panels.  It went much quicker than I expected.  I also cut the foam for the small flotataion chamber between the H4, engine deck and two H2 panels.

I laid out, cut to shape and sanded the edges of the aluminum dash panel insert for the gauges.  I glassed the inside surface of the small, aft flotation compartment.  Cut and laid the glass for the H8A, H8B & H9 panels.  I still need to add a strip of glass on the bottom of the wooden  nose peice to tie it to the H8B panel.

Finished glassing in the bow nose peice and the aft, center floatation compartment.  Cut the glass and covered the outside of the H12 panels and most of the H4 panel.  Trimmed and sanded smooth all the rough edges from earlier glass work.

I finally got the the bottom covered in glass.  One strip of taping was glassed over each outboard stringer, then two peices of cloth were laid on with an overlap in the middle which gave the center stringer two layers of cloth also.  I just have to let the resin kick off tonight and then tomorrow I can flip the hull over and start working on the inside.

I flipped the hull over!  I installed the dash panel and the foredeck stringers.  The H1F panels I built had to be trimmed back to allow enough leg room for two passengers to sit side by side.  The side deck sheets of 1/8" plywood were rough cut to size.

I primed the inside of all of the 1/8" deck plywood peices and cut the mounting block for the bow light.  Then I cut and epoxied peices of wood to fit between the deck stringers on the nose peice.  These will fill the gaps between the deck stringers and give me something to attach the forward deck edge to.

Sanded to shape the foredeck spacers between the stringers.  Filled and filleted the joint between the wooden nose piece and the H8B panel with putty.  Glassed the inside joint of the nose peice to the H8B panel.  Filled and filleted all the joints on the inside of the two aft flotation compartments.  Glassed the remaining surfaces and joints in the port aft flotation compartment.  Cut and hotglued a strut to the inside edge of the H1F panels to support the main deck stringer.  Painted the foredeck stringers with resin.  Painted the the finish coat on the inside of the rough cut deck panels.

I cut and installed the forward steering shaft brace between the cockpit stringers. The holes were drilled in the brace and the dash panel for the steering shaft.  Its almost time to measure for the steering cable.

I finally finished covering all the exposed foam with cloth.  The starboard aft flotation compartment, the face of the dash panel and the forward side of the H1A panels.  I cut and epoxied in place the sides of the foredeck.  I cut two of the four remaining fordeck panels.  I sanded some more of the rough spots throughout the craft and resin coated some more of the stringers.  Oh, what a relief it is to be done with glassing for a little while!

12-14-99

I cut a wedge block for the steering shaft and epoxied it in position on the dash panel.  I drilled the mounting holes for the steering shaft end plates and test fit all the parts in place.   I finished cutting the holes in the aluminum gauge panel and drilled the mounting holes in the dash.

I cut out the hole in the dash panel so the gauge panel & gauges will fit flush against it.  I cut out and test fit the remaining two foredeck panels and sanded all the foredeck panels to size.  I cut a small hole in the port and starboard sides of the H8B panel for the skirt dump control ropes to pass through.  I cut two PVC pipes that will go from the H8B panel and then secure under the dash to keep the ropes out of the way.

12-19-99

I spent most of the day sanding out rough spots, applying resin to any bare wood, priming and painting.  The aft flotation compartments, deck stringers, dash and all the forward inside hull panels are completed.  Its now time to go on to the electrical & steering control installations.

The bottom is glassed, the interior glassing is pretty well complete and the deck framing is done.  Because of where I intend to fly the craft I used extra heavy glass on the bottom of the hull so I wouldn't damage it or punch a hole in it.  I have loads of logs, pointy sticks and a fair number of rough edged rocks that I want to be able to navigate over and around.  Now I'll only have to get careful of ripping the skirt up to bad.

Please follow me along to the next construction phase as I finish out the deck and do more
work on the interior of the hull.  It's really starting to come together now!
