What did I do today?

Hours

08-14-99

Drilled locking bar holes in rudder pivot tubes.  Cut locking bars to length.

Test ran the Kohler 18hp engine.  It runs with fuel poured down the carburetor but would not pick up fuel with the fuel pump.  Its a used engine and has been sitting for awhile so maybe a pump rebuild kit is in order.  It ran 5-10 seconds and fired smoothly in both cylinders until the fuel was consumed.

08-15-99

Cut panels H1, H6, H7, H8A & H8B.

2.50

08-16-99

Cut wooden outboard reinforcing edges for panels H7 & H9.
(Construction will be done in two pieces spliced together.)

1.25

08-19-00

Cut H9 panels.  Attached reinforcing wood to panel H6.  Attached 1st wood reinforcing pieces (outboard edge) to panels H1, H7 & H9.  Cut out rudder panels and attached to rudder pivot tubes.  Rough cut rudders to shape.

3.00

08-20-99

Sanded rudders to final shape.  Sanded leading and trailing edges of rudder to proper contours.

1.50

08-21-99

Installed wooden doubler to H1.  Epoxied wooden reinforcing edges (doubler) to H7 & H9 panels.

2.75

08-22-99

Put fillets in panels H1, H7 & H9 between wood reinforcing edges and foam.  Smoothed voids in rudders next to pivot tubing and steering bolts.

1.25

08-24-99

Sanded fillets and smoothed edges in panels H1, H7, H9 and rudders.  Cut 6 ounce cloth for one side of H1, H6, H7 & H9 panels.  Cut 6 ounce cloth for both sides of 3 rudders.

1.50

08-26-99

Cut cloth mat for H1, H6, H7, H8A, H8B & H9 panels.  Glassed the cockpit side of one H7 panel with cloth mat and 6 ounce cloth.

1.50

08-28-99

Glassed the cockpit side of H1, 2nd H7 and 2 H9 panels with cloth mat and 6 oz cloth.
Oops!  I left an H9 panel in the sun with wet glass.  What a warp I have to try and remove from it now!  I supported one edge and used weights to flatten the panel while it finishes curing.  It should remove most of the warp and twist in the panel.
Note:  I discovered Klegicell absorbs some resin during cure.  Use plenty of resin during initial wetdown of the foam so no air bubbles appear later.

2.50

08-28-99

Smoothed more voids in rudders along pivot tubes.

1.00

08-28-99

Trimmed excess glass from the edges and sanded bevels around H1, H7 and H9 panels.

2.75

08-29-99

Glassed the cockpit side of H6, H8A & H8B panels with cloth mat and 6 oz cloth. The warp and twist in the H9 panel is mostly gone.  The little that's left will be easily worked out during installation.

09-16-99

Trimmed, sanded and beveled the edges of H6, H8A & H8B panels.

1.25

09-17-99

Drilled & cleaned holes for the hardpoints (places to attach screws in the foam) in H6 & two H9 panels.

1.00

09-19-99

Filled hardpoints in H6 & two H9 panels.  Sanded hardpoints smooth in two H9 panels.  Cut two H1F panels & H1D panels.  These three panels are of my own design and are not shown on the original plans.  The H1F panels are to provide more support to the H7 panels & the deck during hull assembly and to provide support for H1D, the foam dash panel. Dash panel will be installed with a slight forward tilt to allow easier viewing of the gauges and switches.

I was preparing the panels for assembly tomorrow and discovered I had forgotten to make the H7 panels to the proper length.  I found 2 small peices I had cut awhile ago that need to be added to the aft edge of H7.  I cut and glued the wood reinforcing strips to the extensions.

This completes the cutout and preparation of the major panels needed to begin the assembly of the hull.  It
is by no means the end of measuring, cutting, shaping and sanding needed to finish these panels.

Please follow me along to the next construction phase as I begin to assemble the hull.  I can hardly
wait to actually see the shape of something that resembles the finished product!

TOTAL TIME THIS PHASE.....
